"Some Aspects of Spintronics in Two-dimensional Materials"

In this seminar, I will discuss two topics related to spin physics and spintronics in two-dimensional materials.
The first part of the talk is concerned with spin transport in single-layer Graphene decorated with transition metal clusters. I will present a theory [1] that predicts a fairly large enhancement of the spin Hall effect  (SHE) in such a system due to the effect of resonant skew scattering. I will show that this simple model provides a reasonably accurate account of some recent experiments in which a giant spin Hall effect has been observed in decorated Graphene devices [2]. In the second part of the talk, I will turn my attention to a new family of two-dimensional crystal that are currently attracting much attention: Transition metal dichalcogenides like MoS2. I will argue these materials, when doped, can become spin Hall insulators displaying the quantized SHE, when undergoing shear strain or if they are placed on substrates that produce Moire patterns [3].
